Description

This antique petite table-bureau is an excellent example of a small but elegant table with a single drawer.  While made during the 19th century in France, its construction is based on designs from the late 17th century and early 18th century when such a compact table was often labeled a “gaming table."  Unlike the typical Louis XIII style torsades or spiral turnings, this table’s legs reflect a further evolution in style toward light, graceful turnings of varying widths and patterns.  A significant remnant of the earlier style, however, is the toupie at the center of the “H” stretcher --  although less tall and effusive than its 17th century antecedents.  Several small repairs have been made to the top in which wood of the same type and grain has been inserted.  These repairs appear to be quite old and blend beautifully with the character of the table.  Made of solid walnut and hand-carved, this 19th century piece reflects its heritage as the writing desk of choice for France’s literary lions.  A similar piece is on view at the Maison Balzac in Paris.  While in exile on the island of Guernsey, Victor Hugo was photographed in his conservatory of his home, Hauteville House, with a similar table.  This table's relatively light color and warm patina permit a full appreciation of the beauty and distinction of the walnut tree from which this piece was crafted.
