| Description |
It is rare to find eight antique chairs, preserved together as these are from the late 19th or early 20th century. Hand-carved from solid French walnut, their stylistic vocabulary is pure gothic revival – back panels of linen-fold or plis de serviette typical of the Somme and Aisne areas, intricately carved spandrels, tracery, twisted columns, and finials in the shape of stylized fleurs-de-lys. While currently covered in a dark faux leather, these chairs would benefit from recovering a new material of the buyer’s choosing. Photos below show how some of the chairs are uphostered in a shiny faux leather while others have a duller finish. For other pieces featuring fenestrage and linen-fold panels, see bench 9208, and buffet 9452. |
