Description

This armoire was commissioned, decades ago, from the renowned workshop Ebénisterie Loch in the Alsace region of France. Made of solid cherry with modern interior fittings, the armoire marries modern convenience with classic Louis XIV design elements, including the écoinçon panels on the sides. It faithfully reproduces characteristics of antique French armoires but without the concerns about condition and durability that arise with pieces surviving from the 18th century. In the words of the owner from whom it was acquired, she wanted a Louis XIV style armoire without the “antique stink” that she had encountered when looking for a genuine 18th century armoire. The solid cherry panels are particularly striking in the absence of modern finishes distorting cherry to shades of maroon. Instead, the depth and beauty of the grain and natural color of the wood are highlighted.
